My 3 year old is ALWAYS wanting to use his scissors to practice cutting. We practice cutting paper from time to time, but we are still working on grasping the scissors correctly and building strength in his little hands.
As our little ones build strength in their hands, they are able to begin using small scissors around 2. However, it does take time and practice to build scissor skills.
So, we came up with a FUN sensory activity to work on cutting plus fine motor strength and skills.
Here is what we did ---->. We boiled some spaghetti noodles and dyed them a fun color to practice these skills in a new and a bit more exciting way :)
Boil spaghetti noodles
Rinse under COLD water and strain water
Add to bag with food coloring of choice
Give a good shake
Dump back into strainer and rinse off excess food coloring
Add noodles to bowl or pan and give additional bowl or cup to drop noodles into
Give your little one a scissors or tweezers to practice fine motor skills!
Whenever your little ones are using scissors and even tweezers make sure to monitor closely! We don't have any, but they do make safer options for tweezers for your little ones that I linked below!
