Fine motor skills provide many benefits for our littles, and it is our job as parents to implement fun acitivities that boost these skills. Practicing fine motor skills can strengthen their little hands, aid in independence, and build success in their daily life.
These skills will develop as our children get older, but there are a handful of simple activities we can do at home to assist in this development.
Free draw
Playdough
Building with blocks, magnetic tiles, or linking cubes
Sorting
Using tongs, spoons, tweezers, scoops. etc.
Placing small objects into a container or jar
Stacking cups
Puzzles
Here are two simple and fun motor activities we practiced!
Cheerios and Pipe Cleaners
For this activity all you need are some cheerios and pipe cleaners. Depending on your child's ability and age you can have them practice putting the cheerio on to the pipe cleaner or simply pulling it off.
This is an incredibly simple activity to implement during snack time!
2. Linking Cubes, Tape, and a Jar
My toddler was practicing drawing some lines, and I wanted something quick and easy for my one year old to do. We had the linking cubes out, so I grabbed a mason jar and some painters tape and created a small hole over the top for him to practice putting the cubes into. It was easy to create and kept him busy!
Of course, there are tons of great resources you can buy as well to practice these skills! Here are a few links to some we have at home that the boys love and others that just look fun!
