Number Line-Up

Here is a fun and simple math activity to get your littles working on their counting, number recognition, and also to just become familiar with a number line.

Number lines play a huge role in helping visualize number placement and the relationship between numbers. This helps children be able to visualize the location of a number. It also eventually can be an aid when learning addition and subtraction.

For this activity I used:

  • Painters Tape

  • Index Cards

  • Marker

  1. I created a "number line" with the painters tape. I did numbers 1-15, but you could do whatever numbers you are working on at home!

  2. I used the index cards and wrote the numbers 1-15.

To Play:

  • There is a variety of ways you could play this. To begin, I would suggest starting at 1 and working your way up to the largest number. Explain as you go up the number line, that the numbers get bigger. You can work on number recognition and counting when working your way up from 1.

  • As your child progresses, the goal is to be able to mix up the numbers and have them figure out where each number belongs on the number line. For example, if you give them a 5, they find the 5 spot on the number line. Help them count their way up to that spot.

  • After you get all the numbers placed, you can turn it into a game. I gave my son a fly swatter, and I said a number. He then swatted the number I said.

I was creating the number line rather quickly, so appreciate all the imperfections :)
