Fall Sensory Play

Fall is such a fun time of the year to engage your little ones in sensory play. The change of seasons, all the fun Holidays and activities that take place, it truly is the best! Here are a few sensory play ideas we have tried out so far :) 1. Pie making with playdough

2. "The Golden Acorn"

  • We found The Golden Acorn book at the library and my boys were instantly obsessed, so of course we had to create a little sensory bin/game out of it!

  • Not only is it a fun and adorable book, but it also has a great message about the importance of friendships

  • We used: fall colored rice, burch logs, mini wooden leaves, acorns, and a mini squirrel (or animal of choosing)!

  • To turn it into a game we used a dry erase dice from the dollar tree and added +1, +2, and -1.

  • Lay out the burch log pieces to create a small path. Put the "golden" acorn at the end of the path. Roll the dice and continue playing until your animal reaches the golden acorn!

3. Apple sensory play!

  • We made red, green, and yellow colored chickpeas + added pom poms to our sensory tray.

  • Made some DIY trees with toilet paper rolls and construction paper

  • The perfect color sorting activity for fall!

  • To color your chickpeas: simply add acrylic paint + chickpeas into a plastic baggy, shake to cover, and lay out on parchment paper to dry!

  • To make trees: cut slits on both sides of toilet paper roll, cut out tree shaped top with construction paper, and slide into slits!

  • Your littles can sort with tongs, spoons, or fingers!

4. Pumpkins on the Farm

  • This was our first time using popcorn kernels for sensory play, and it turned out SO cute!

  • We used some of our wooden Melissa and Doug farm toys and then added in some miscellaneous sensory play items. Pumpkins, baskets, tractors,

  • Explore through imaginative play!

5. Nature walk + sensory play

  • Fall is the BEST time of the year in my opinion. The change of colors, crisp air, and all the fun holidays make for some really fun memories with our little ones.

  • The boys and I went for a walk and collected leaves, sticks, and berries to add into our sensory bin. Creating this "job" really allowed them to pay attention too and find excitement in all the beauty that fall has to offer! The colors, sizes, and shapes of leaves!!!

  • When we got home we added our finds to our sensory bin with: playdough, fall colored rice, playdough cutters and stamps, wooden and fabric leaves, and some burch log pieces!

  • Hobby Lobby and the dollar tree are the best places to find some of these fun fall sensory items.

  • Make rice the same way you make your colored chickpeas!

6. Pumpkin Soup

  • Water play is always fun, so this pumpkin soup activity was a blast! We added in the popular "Pumpkin Soup" book by Helen Cooper for extra engagement!

  • We used some mini pumpkins from the dollar store, colored rice for "salt", and of course some orange water! Add in some spoons and bowls and you have a simple but fun sensory bin!

7. Orange Pumpkin Play

  • Making sensory bases can be EXTREMELY simple. Which us busy parents always love.

  • Below are 3 simple bases we used almost daily during our pumpkin weeks!

  1. Colored rice: add rice, paint, and optional hand sanitizer to baggy and give a good shake to coat. Lay out on parchment paper to dry!

  2. Playdough: we've been making our own lately, but store options are great too! Place all ingredients in saucepan over medium heat (1/2 cup salt, 1 cup water, 1 tbsp cream of tartar, 2 tbsp oil, 1 cup flour, food coloring and spices of choice!) Mix until dough forms and remove from heat to cool. Knead for a few minutes!

  3. Orange lentils: No work included, just head to the store :)
