DIY "Lava Lamps"

I have been seeing this fun science trend for littles ALL over social media and finally decided to give it a try! And let me tell you, it was so worth it! For us parents and even grandparents who have had lava lamps when we were younger, I totally

get the hype of this activity haha! Pictures really don't do it justice. You have just have to give it a try!

This activity only requires a few ingredients that you my have at home or can easily get at any store.

You will need:

  • A glass or plastic jar

  • Cooking oil (we used vegetable oil)

  • Food coloring

  • Alka seltzer tablets

Even if your little is too young to understand the science behind the activity, it is still exciting for them to watch and be a part of! I didn't use exact measurements, but here is the gist of what we did.

  1. Fill the jar about 2/3rds full with cooking oil

  2. Add about 1/3rd of water making sure to leave a couple inches of space on top

  3. Have your little add a couple drops of food coloring

  4. Drop the Alka Seltzer

  5. WATCH THE MAGIC HAPPEN

Once the reaction stops, you can add another Alka Seltzer tablet or you can redo the activity with other colors or change the measurements of oil and water to see how that changes your experiment! No matter the age of your littles, they will love to watch the bubbling reaction that takes place during this activity.
