Construction Theme

Updated: Aug 26, 2023

This one is for the boy moms (and the mom's who have truck loving girls!) These past couple weeks have been ALL about construction trucks. If you live in the Midwest you totally understand "construction season." So this was a great opportunity to talk about all the construction going on and point out the tools/trucks that were being used! Take some time to get out of the house and find a construction site. Maybe even have a picnic in the back of your car while watching and talking about the different trucks and tools being used.

Over these two weeks, we focused on the letter "T" and "I". For our letter and writing practice we are using the alphabet bundles that I have created, a combination of upper and lowercase letters. You can also add in the beginning sound "Find and Color" documents I created while working on your letters.

I created a construction theme bundle for you to download and do some or all of the activities with your littles! In the download, there is a "lesson plan" example and a template if you wish to change up your week! As a stay at home mom, the days get BUSY, so I enjoy having a loose idea of activities to have ready and pull out when we need some more structure!

Here is a look at some of the activities we did (download the file to see all the activities)!

Sensory and Hands-on Play:

  • Building towers - put a piece of tape on the wall and then use blocks or magnetic tiles to try and build your tower to the height of the tape

  • Sand/dirt and trucks - grab some sand or dirt to create a simple sensory bin with some toy trucks and rocks

  • Playdough exploration - grab brown play dough (or make your own) and add a bunch of loose parts! We used tools, nuts and bolts, washers, trucks, and rocks.

  • Truck ramp painting - using a large roll of paper and some cardboard, create a ramp. Throw some paint on a baking sheet. Dip the trucks in the paint and roll them down the ramp creating tire tracks!

  • Shape building - use popsicle sticks to create a variety of sheets (download included in construction theme bundle)

  • Building bridges - use solo cups and popsicle sticks to create bridges, roads, etc.

  • Chickpea sensory bin with trucks - we used brown and yellow to paint to make some fun colorful chickpeas to play with our mini trucks!

  • Pom Pom scoop with bulldozer and colored bowls

  • Building with our favorite Picasso marble run tiles

Crafts:

  • Lego and Pom Pom construction truck painting - tape down a picture of a truck to construction paper, use legos as stamps or a pinch a Pom Pom with a clothespin to paint around the truck. Peel off the tape to reveal your construction truck!

  • Letter T for tires

  • Letter I for ice cream

  • Q-tip tracing - Draw out shapes (letters, numbers) onto a plain piece of paper. Give your little one paint and a q tip to trace (or color) the shapes

Learning:

  • Here is a little look at some of the activities you will be able to do from the construction bundle! Name recognition, counting, beginning sounds, colors
