Button Shape Outline

It's always a win when you do an activity with your littles that practices more than one concept! Here is something we did at home that helped us work on our shapes and also fine motor skills. It also helps your little recognize how to form shapes when they begin to enter their writing and drawing stages.

For this activity I used:

  • Shape play dough mats that I created, but you could also simply draw out shapes on a plain piece of paper

  • Buttons of any size or color

Lay out one shape at a time and have your little place the buttons in a continuous pattern. Depending on age, they may want to place them randomly on the shape outline and that is okay. However, try to have them place one button next to the other to create the shape!

Add ons - try out having them search for a certain color (make a blue circle). Or try out an AB pattern (blue, green, blue, green). If using the mats I have created, your little could use the buttons to outline the inner and outer shape.

You can mix up the activity any way you would like!
