Big and Small Ornaments

Sorting is a great cognitive skill to practice comparisons, similarities and differences as well as visual discrimination. This is a skill our littles will use more and more as they get older and enter the mathematics world.

For this activity all you need is two different size ornaments and something to sort them into! We used two different cake pans. You could also use two different muffin pans, and they could place the ornaments in each spot. Color isn't important for this activity because they are practicing BIG and SMALL.

Start the activity by explicitly showing which ornament is big and which is small. Then let them sort away!

As your little is sorting. Discuss that big and small are opposites. You could then discuss other opposites. As well as other words for big (large, giant, huge) and small (little, tiny).

TIP: Make sure your ornaments are shatter-proof! Also, go to the dollar store!! :)
