Alphabet Sensory Match with Magnetic Letters

Magnetic Letters are a great tool to use with your littles. Whether they are just openly exploring with the letters, practicing letter recognition, or working on spelling they are very versatile. My favorite part about magnetic letters is that they can be used on the fridge. A refrigerator isn't always your typical play space, so it is a fun way to mix up your play and learning.

For this activity we worked on letter recognition + matching, fine motor skills, and added it into a bin of colored rice to implement some sensory play. Here is what we did:

  1. Add colored rice to bin (I added red rice, so we could camouflage some of the letters)

  2. Throw in magnetic letters - I did each letter of the alphabet (You could mix this part up by adding uppercase, lowercase, or even just do letters in your little's name)

  3. Give the letters a good mix to try and "hide" them

  4. Get your little a tool to use for fine motor practice - tongs, tweezers, small spoons

  5. Write out the alphabet on one or two sheets of paper and post them onto the fridge

  6. Give your little the bin of rice/letters with the tong and let them begin their alphabet match!

BONUS - this was a great activity for my older to help my younger toddler who is working on learning his letters. My older toddler got to enter the "teacher" role, and he loved it! Also, if you have two littles doing the activity, I highly suggest giving them only one fine motor tool. A great opportunity to practice sharing and taking turns. It may be a rough start :) but I promise the ending is adorably worth it.
